1. History
This Department was established in
1946, when Biology group in B.Sc. was introduced. The Department started Post Graduation
in 1950. The subject Industrial Chemistry was started in 1990-91 at under-Graduate level
with combination of Chemistry and Geology, looking to its popularity and scope of
self-employment and jobs to the students. The Department has received permission from
State Govt. to start Industrial Chemistry at P.G. level and it is in process. The
Department started Biochemistry at undergraduate level with the combination of Chemistry
& Zoology in the year 1999. The Department has got clearance from State Govt. to start
P.G. in Biochemistry.
The department has formulated a dynamic and
relevant curriculum according to UGC New Delhi and possesses an excellent infrastructure.
The basic aim of this department is to introduce new combination of theoretical studies,
new technologies in experimental application level and research oriented activities. To
enhance effectiveness of teaching process and efficiency of the students, use of Internet,
the staff members of this department frequently use Audio-Visual methods as 3D system of
teaching. The department is globally recognized for its outstanding research in biomedical
polymer science, nanocarriers as drug vehicles, polymer synthesis, natural products and
coordination chemistry.
A unique feature of the department is the inclusion of Radiochemistry
Experiments at Post Graduation level, which has made this department and college to be the
first institution in the state to include Radioactivity Curriculum. The department has a C
level Radiochemistry Laboratory also.

The academic society of Chemistry comprises
postgraduate students as office bearers. The society conducts lectures of Eminent
Professors, scientists and experts of various branches of Chemistry and Computer Science
related to chemistry. The Chemical society also conducts various quiz programme, model
exhibitions, wall chart exhibition, I.Q special test related to chemistry for the P.G
student of the department. Seminars are conducted by the Chemical society. The members of
the society and experts of specialized field to prepare their lectures guide the P.G
students and their performance is improved through discussions.
The Chemical society is exposing and equating students to newer and
current areas of competitiveness. The Chemical society activities help in the overall
development of the students and they are highly motivated, well informed and better
prepared for their future. Ms. Deepti Jha has qualified the NET examination in Oct. 2003.

A workshop was jointly organized by Chemistry department Govt. Model
Science College in collaboration with Western Regional Instrumentation Center (WRIC),
Mumbai, and Mumbai University on Maintenance of Laboratory Instrument from 08-07-2002 to
13-07-02. In this programme WRIC experts guided 30 participants from Madhya Pradesh and
Chattishgarh in working, handling and expertise in maintenance of general Laboratory
instruments. This programme was coordinated by Dr. Arun Kakkar of Chem Department.
IANCAS and departments of Chemistry and Physics Govt Model Science
College jointly organized a workshop. The workshop comprised of number of lecture by
eminent scientists like Dr. V.Venugopal, Dr. V.K.Manchanda ,Dr.S.Sabharwal, Dr.Neelam Goel
and others. The workshop was held from 13th to 21st December 2004
and during 8 days a series of lectures were delivered and experiments was conducted.
56 participants attended the workshop from different colleges including
both faculty members and students. The workshop was inaugurated by the eminent
Geoscientist Dr.G.L.Negi and concluded by the higher authorities of Higher Educations
department, Dr.S.M. Paul Khurana, Vice Chancellor R.D.V.V.Jabalpur, also attended the
closing function
The resource persons from BARC also visited at neighboring schools and
demonstrated various radioactivity experiments and delivered lectures to school and
college level students.
An exhibition highlighting various facts about nuclear programme of
Dr.V.K.Manchanda Head of Radiochemistry Department also highlighted our governmental
activities of IANCAS. The whole workshop was given a wide coverage at national level and
by media.
In the year 2006 the department in collaboration with the Indian
Academy of Sciences, Banglore, organized a two days lecture workshop from 15 to 16
September on Frontiers in Chemistry. The workshop was participated by a large
number of faculty and students to listen the expert orators from IIT, Kanpur.
