The Department of Physics was founded as a consequence of the establishment of science faculty in this prestigious college in the session 1896-97. The first recorded head of the dept. was Prof. V. M. Dabadghao who headed the dept. from 1943 to 1948. This department happens to be the oldest Department of Physics in the state of Madhya Pradesh. It is also older than the R. D. University Jabalpur, which was founded in 1958.

The M.Sc. (Physics) program was started in 1948 under the headship of Prof. A. S. Ganeshan. The department progressed with better temper dedication and outcome under the headships of eminent physicists of their time. With the honour of autonomy granted to the college in 1991, electronics was introduced as a separate subject at UG level under the able headship of Prof. V. K. Mishra. In 1995, a proposal for the introduction of vocational courses in computers was put forward before UGC and subsequently with the permission of UGC, two vocational courses in Computer Application and Computer Maintenance were started in 1996.This could be materialized due the efforts of Dr. J. P. Diddi, the HOD at that time. The progress of the Dept. continued ahead and it used to be prospered and well equipped in due course of time. It was only due to the clear vision of our past heads and faculty members.

In 2000-01, under a scheme of UGC, a sum of Rs. 15 lacs was granted to the college for the establishment of a Nodal Computer Lab to provide computer facilities to the PG students of three earmarked depts. The dept. of physics was honoured to start, supervise and control the said Lab. The Nodal Lab has been established in the dept. and is equipped with approx. 25 computers and other modern facilities. The dept. further stepped up and in 2002, a six-semester BCA program was started during the headship of Dr. B. K. Kathal. In 2004, a detailed proposal to upgrade the UG and PG Labs was submitted to DST and a sum of Rs. 15 lacs was granted to the dept. under the FIST scheme of DST. Dr. B. K. Kathal as head, not only took up the task of enrichment, rather he was very instrumental about the expansion of the dept too. As a result in 2004, two additional lecture halls were constructed from the departmental self-financed fund, and are being used as BCA classrooms.

With such a long history and heritage, the department is presently taking care of electronics, CA & CM, as subjects at UG level apart from Physics. The dept is running approximately 11 different subjects combinations at UG level, a regular M.Sc. (Physics) program at PG level and a BCA course. The dept. is well equipped with 3 UG Labs for physics, 1 UG Lab each for CA, CM, electronics and BCA. Our computer labs are equipped with more than 70 computers. At PG level, the department has 4 modern labs designated as Optics & Lasers Lab, Electronics Lab, Digital Electronics and Communication Lab and a Nodal Computer Lab.

The department has 17 regular teaching staff members together with 05 more sanctioned but vacant posts. All the staff members are well qualified and engaged in R & D activities along with their normal duties of teaching UG and PG classes. Electronics, Digital Electronics, CA and CM subjects at UG and PG levels have really proved to be and asset to the department. A no. of major/ minor research projects have been completed in previous years and at present three minor projects are in progress. The department is also having about 20 trained and skilled supporting non-teaching staff to manage the laboratories and office activities.

Researches in the field(s) of cosmic physics, condensed matter physics low dimensional systems, luminescence, solar physics, polymer physics etc. are the usual and regular activities of dept. The present head of the dept., Dr. Sudhir Ku. Shrivastava is very keen to establish more research labs and subsequently to provide other necessary facilities to the staff members. His vision will certainly add a lot to the progress and prestige of the dept. Over and above, approx. 70 research papers have been published by the staff members of the dept. Dr. B. K. Kathal, Dr. S. K. Shrivastava, Dr. M. K. Richharia, Dr. M. L. Chauhan and Dr. S. K. Dubey have visited aboard to present research papers in international conferences, Approximately 10 research scholars are working in the dept under the able and efficient guidance of our faculty members. This is not the end. One of our staff members, Dr. (Mrs.) M. Kotecha is presently on PDF and working in Germany.

The strength of the department is a function of the no. of students it is handling with. The subject wise strength of the dept. is as under.

    • Physics (UG)-960
    • Physics (PG) - 34
    • Electronics-181
    • CA-206
    • CM- 95
    • BCA- 57
    • BCA- 57

On the basis of available records, the history of HODs goes back to 1943, when Dr. V. M. Dabadghao headed the department.                                                  The subsequent heads and their tenures are listed below.

So far as the contributions of the previous heads of the department are concerned, it is due to the constructive visionary approach and working styles of the previous heads, that the department has taken its present shape, status and ability. Dr. T. S. Murty, later on became the founder head of the dept. of physics, R. D. University, Jabalpur which signifies that the physics department of R. D. University has rooted from this department Subsequently, Dr. Murty was appointed as the Vice Chancellor of Sagar University and later on the Director General of MPCOST. Dr. N. B. Dhagat retired as Addl. Director of Higher Education, Govt. of MP. Dr. B. K. Kathal went Japan to present a paper in an international conference.

The department has at present 17 regular teaching staff members and 05 more vacant (but sanctioned) posts. The qualification(s), teaching experience(s), area(s) of specialization & interest(s) and other achievements of our staff members are listed below.
